"Massage" covers a lot of ground — from an hour of pure decompression to focused clinical work on an injured shoulder. Here's what's on the menu at our NW Calgary clinic, and how to pick.
Deep tissue massage
Slow, deliberate pressure into the deeper muscle layers, targeting chronic tension, adhesions, and the knots that shrug off lighter work. Best for: long-standing neck and shoulder tightness, desk-related upper back tension, and heavy-training muscle groups. Good deep tissue should feel intense but productive — you should always be able to breathe through it.
Relaxation massage
Flowing, rhythmic techniques that downshift the nervous system. Don't underestimate it as "just pampering": for stress, poor sleep, and tension headaches, calming the nervous system is the treatment. Best for: high-stress seasons, recovery weeks, and anyone whose shoulders live next to their ears.
Sports massage
Timed to your training: brisker, stimulating work before events; flushing, recovery-focused work after. Integrates stretching and joint movement. Best for: runners, lifters, league players, and weekend warriors with a race calendar.
Cupping massage
Our registered cupping specialist uses silicone and glass cups to lift and decompress tissue — the inverse of massage pressure. Excellent for stubborn fascial restriction, IT band tightness, and broad areas of back tension. Expect painless circular marks that fade within days.
Prenatal massage
Safe positioning and adapted techniques for the aches of pregnancy — low back, hips, and swollen legs all benefit.
Therapeutic massage within your rehab plan
When you're recovering from an injury, car accident, or surgery, massage slots into your physiotherapy plan: the RMT releases what's guarded, the physiotherapist strengthens what's weak, and notes flow between them — one of the advantages of a true multidisciplinary clinic.
