Finding a Massage Therapist That Does Direct Billing in Calgary

Direct billing turns massage from a reimbursement chore into a tap-your-card experience. Here's what to look for — and what to ask before you book.

If you've ever paid for a massage, kept the receipt, filled out a claim form, and waited weeks for reimbursement — you already understand why direct billing matters. The clinic submits the claim for you at checkout, your insurer pays their share directly, and you only cover whatever's left.

Why "registered" is the key word

Insurance plans cover massage performed by a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) — a credential that requires accredited training and ongoing registration. Before booking anywhere, confirm the therapist is registered; without it, no amount of direct-billing infrastructure will make your plan pay.

At Nolan Hill Physiotherapy & Massage, every massage therapist on our team is an RMT, so every treatment is insurance-eligible.

Questions worth asking before your first visit

  1. "Do you direct bill my insurer?" — most clinics cover the major providers, but it's worth confirming yours specifically
  2. "What does my plan cover per visit and per year?" — plans vary widely; a two-minute call to your insurer prevents surprises
  3. "Does my plan require a doctor's note?" — Alberta doesn't require a referral for massage, but some insurance plans require one for reimbursement
  4. "What happens if coverage runs out mid-year?" — you simply pay the clinic rate directly; we'll always tell you where your coverage stands

A note on GST

Massage therapy services are subject to GST in Alberta — it's added to the treatment cost and is worth factoring into your per-visit math.

Coordination of benefits: the underused trick

Couples and families often have two plans. Benefits can be coordinated — the primary plan pays first, the second plan picks up some or all of the remainder. Bring both cards; our front desk handles the sequencing.

The bottom line

Massage that's easy to access is massage you'll actually book consistently — and consistency is where the benefits live. We direct bill most major insurance companies, 7 days a week, in the heart of NW Calgary. Call 587-355-3555 and we'll get you set up.
